Do you feel like you’re always working and never have time for yourself or anything other than work? If so, it’s time to rebalance your life! Achieving a healthy work-life balance is essential for maintaining your sanity and preventing burnout. In this blog post, we will discuss 10 steps that will help you create a more balanced lifestyle. Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to enjoying life outside of work!
What Is a Work-Life Balance?
Firstly, let’s begin by looking at what a work-life balance is. According to Oxford Language, this is the definition that was given: the division of one’s time and focus between working and family or leisure activities. When either starts to interfere with the other, it can cause implications.
In short, work-life balance is when both sides of your work and social life are equally balanced. This is something that is difficult to achieve and can be different for each individual person depending on their life and situation. But it is important to try and find a healthy balance between the two that is right for you, as it will help with mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
Why Is It Important to Have a Healthy Work-Life Balance?
There are many reasons why having a healthy work-life balance is essential. It is not only important for health and relationships, but it can also improve your employee’s productivity, and ultimately performance. So this does mean that having a good work-life balance is not just beneficial to the employee but also to the employer as well.

Here are 3 reasons why having a work-life balance is essential:
- Fewer health problems – When your work-life balance is poor, it can implement all areas of your life but one of them that really feels the pull is your health. This can be both your mental and physical health. A study conducted by UCL of more than 10,000 participants stated that workers who worked three or more hours longer than required had a 60% higher risk of heart-related problems than those who didn’t work overtime. Therefore, this really does show the risks of not having a work-life balance and how it can impact people.
- More engagement – Having a good balance will improve engagement. When you have the chance to have a healthy work-life balance it will encourage you to be engaged in the time you are working and also engaged in the other aspects of your life. Stopping you from thinking about the other one when fulfilling the other aspect. Being engaged and present helps you to build relationships and focus on the task at hand.
- Fewer employees burning out – Unfortunately no matter what, burnouts are ultimately unavoidable due to many different circumstances and situations that happen in people’s lives. The inability to separate work from personal life will massively increase the chances of burnout which really reflects the importance of having a healthy balance.

10 Steps That Will Help You Create a More Balanced Lifestyle
Now we have established what a work-life balance is and why it is so important. It is time to discuss the 10 main steps that you can take to create a more balanced lifestyle. These steps will help you to benefit both sides of your life, helping your balance them equally.
1. Define what a healthy work-life balance looks like for you
Everybody’s healthy work-life balance will be different due to their lifestyles and needs. This can be down to what people’s job includes, whether they have children or other responsibilities.
It is important to define what your ideal balance would be and the factors that mean the most to you within that. This will help you to begin your journey on the way to a new work-life balance that works for you!
2. Identify the areas of your life that are out of balance
To re-balance your life you need to identify which areas of your life lack attention. This can either be work or your social life, or even both.
To do this, we recommend thinking about each area of your life and what you do and don’t like about that part. If you are struggling with this, you could ask people from different areas of your life about how present you are when you are with them and undertaking tasks. It can be challenging to see yourself how you are in different situations but the people around you may be able to observe from another point of view.
3. Set realistic goals for achieving a more balanced lifestyle
Once you have identified the areas of your life that you would to re-balance or give some more attention to. Set out a list of realistic goals that you would like to achieve from this. You can choose to have time-frames or leave them open for the time being. Time frames can add pressure to the re-balance of your life, but they can also help some people to stay focused.
Some examples of goals you could set:
- Exercise 3 x a week
- Drink 3 liters of water every day
- Journal every evening
- Spend an evening every week with my family watching something new
- Play tennis every weekend
- Meet up with friends once a month
- Eat dinner 3 x a week with no phones
- Do not open my work emails on a Saturday

4. Create a schedule or plan of action for implementing changes
You’ve planned out some goals, so let’s now put a plan in place so you can action these! It can be easy to write out your goals and just stop there, but it is important to find the time to implement the new goals and changes in your life.
5. Make time for yourself every day and stick to it
As well as making time for other people and excelling in their relationships, it is important to remember to take time for yourself too! After all, the way you treat yourself will reflect in your relationships with other people.
A great way to do this is to begin or end each by journalling. Journaling is fantastic as it evokes mindfulness and helps writers remain present while keeping perspective. It presents an opportunity for emotional catharsis and helps the brain regulate emotions. It is important to find a time that works for you when you can clear your mind and channel your thoughts. Call this your ‘me time’, even if it is just 10 minutes per day.
6. Find an activity or hobby that brings you joy outside of work
Having some time to allow your brain to think about something different is important. Allowing yourself to find joy in an activity is a great way to refocus your brain away from its normal, everyday thoughts and switch off. It is not healthy to think about work 24/7, and this will lead to burning out.
Think about things like that you like to do, even if you feel you don’t have time for it now. What would you do if you had the time? Some great ideas are baking, running, drawing, gym classes, and gaming. Either set some time aside to enjoy your hobby with some alone time or join a club and experience some time with like-minded people, that enjoy the same things as you!

7. Spend time with loved ones and build strong relationships
When you are very busy and focused on your job, it can put a strain on your relationships. It is important to recognise this and find the time to build on these relationships to make them stronger.
You may want to set some time aside each week or month with the different people in your life. You can do small things that include dinners, drinks, or watching a movie. Or you could plan bigger things like days out, weekends away, and holidays for the coming year. Use this time to switch off and focus on finding out more about your loved ones and friends. This will really help to develop your relationships outside of work.
8. Take care of your physical health by exercising and moving your body
Exercising
Exercising can benefit your physical and mental health. The health benefits of exercising and staying fit are extraordinary. it doesn’t only help you to control your weight but also combats health conditions and diseases including, strokes, metabolic syndromes, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. It is also really great for helping and managing depression and anxiety.
The UK Chief Medical Officers’ Physical Activity Guidelines, published on GOV.UK, encourages adults to be active every day and suggests doing at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week through a variety of options. There are many different types of activity that you can begin to incorporate into your everyday routine. Whether that is walking to the dog, singing up to a fitness class, or joining the gym.
Eating Well
Exercise and moving your body work perfectly alongside a healthy, nutritious diet. A healthy, well-balanced diet can help us think clearly and feel more alert. It can also improve concentration and attention span. Conversely, an inadequate diet can lead to fatigue, and impaired decision-making, and can slow down reaction time. Fuel your body with good food, and it will improve your overall mood helping to benefit all areas of your life!
9. Practice self-care
Look after yourself as much as you look after your social life, hobbies, and work! Self-care can sound expensive or time-consuming, and even a little bit confusing if you are unsure what it actually involves. In its simplest form, self-care is just the little things we do to look after our own mental health. It doesn’t have to be big, expensive days out and spa days, but it can be small little things you do each day to ensure you are feeling the best you can!
It can be as simple as running yourself a bubble bath and grabbing a facemask, or pouring yourself your favourite drink alongside some of your favourite snacks and putting on a new Netflix series. It is all about finding the time for yourself.

10. Explore and be adventurous
Life without challenges can get boring and tiring. You must challenge yourself to get better and push yourself to do new things. The more you do this, the more you will add excitement and fulfilment to your life! Think about the new things you want to achieve in all aspects of your life, even if they feel a little out of reach. It is important to have things to aspire to and work towards.
